Exodus Burned

Exodus Burned is a VR tournament sports game that combines Mocap and VR technology to immerse the player in a competitive game environment.
In this 2 vs 2 competitive game, you and your teammate play against a rival team to see who can get to the escape pod first and survive to tell the tale.

The game is a mixture of an escape room and an obstacle course where each match is a different experience.
During each match, spectators can watch and interact by voting for the next challenges the players have to compete in.

Each team is tasked with completing small challenges better and faster than the opposing team.
These challenges last for 1 minute each with a total time of 10 challenges per match.
After each challenge is completed, you receive a score based on the number of successful actions you accomplished and your platform goes to a higher floor.
If you fail too many times within the time limit, you go down a floor.
Your objective is to get the highest score and get to the top floor before the other team does.

There are lots of challenges, such as dodging incoming blocks, stepping on predetermined floor patterns, shooting enemies, dodging enemy bullets, and grabbing cookies to feed a robot dog.
You have to physically use your body to jump, run, duck, and crawl and accomplish these challenges to be crowned the Exodus Burned Champion.

In the far depths of space, far beyond the reach of Earth, travels the Exodus.
This spaceship is set on a mission of discovery… but fate takes a turn for the worst.

The emergency alarm suddenly goes off and a crew of four wakes up from their cryogenic sleep.
A critical malfunction has occurred and the Exodus is going to crash straight into the Sun within 10 minutes!

Without any resources or time to fix the Exodus, the crew runs to the last escape pod that could potentially save their life.
However, the crew finds out that the escape pod is only large enough for two people and a fight for survival befalls this now split-up team of four.

Which team can reach the escape pod first and live to tell the tale?

On Exodus Burned, I was an Intern Game Designer & Sequence Scripter.
I was on the project for around 15 weeks and worked with 13 team members.

My duties included:

  • Designing mini-games
  • Conceptualizing gameplay elements
  • Cutscene scripting
  • Playtesting
  • Motion Capture / VR Headset Tester
  • In-engine trailer production

I worked on the overall production of Exodus Burned during my internship at PWXR.

It was very fun and challenging working with the team to design mini-games that are easy to understand in a short amount of time that also provide a suitable challenge for the competitive environment.
Because each challenge changes after a minute, every player needs to understand the next objective and be able to act accordingly in just a few seconds.
We focused on very simple tasks to accomplish this by putting the challenge on the physical abilities and reaction time of the players, rather than searching for hidden items in hard-to-reach areas or having to look around too much.
We wanted the fun to come from how you can adapt and move your body instead of having to figure out tough to understand objectives that hinder movement or could cause headaches due to extreme head movements between challenges.

I’ve learned a lot about what the players need to enjoy and immerse themselves in their VR experience from this project’s production cycle.
It was great to find new ways to combine VR technology with physical activities where we actively looked for ways to lessen any hindrance or motion sickness the player might have during their play session.
This required a lot of playtesting and ensured that each objective is easy to understand without having to move your head too much during each challenge.
